Welcome to the Nature-Inspired Energy Texture Gallery

Traditionally, artists use layers of paint to describe their emotional response to the world around them. Over the past few years, I have discovered that I can achieve a more satisfying and intriguing result by sculpting textures into a special acrylic medium. This medium is both tough and flexible. So far I’ve experimented with different substrates (surfaces) to include cellulose panels, loose canvas, and small stretched canvases such as the ones in this “Energy Texture” collection.

The first “Dimensional Abstracts” of 2016 were topographically-inspired, childhood memories of flying with my dad in the co-pilot’s seat, augmented by hours of study of satellite imagery. Paddling a canoe in such varied locations as both coasts of Florida, the Florida Keys, the Everglades, the Okefenokee Refuge and near the St. Lawrence Seaway in Quebec, personally taught me the power of tides, currents and wind. College classes in oceanography, earth science and anatomy excited me. Even more exciting was the realization that I could sculpt shapes on substrates to represent the invisible forces of energy swirling around and within us. So I’ve immersed myself in the study of energy, not just the wavelengths in the music I listen to that have moved my tools, but every kind of energy science has been able to detect. And for me, abstractly expressing these phenomena through low-relief sculpted surfaces is the most fun I’ve ever had while making art.

Part of the adventure has been through the use of marvelous pigments available through recent technology that bring forth the intricate textures of my work. Unfortunately, some of these magical effects are best seen in person! Which is why some of the sculptures below are represented by five different photos, to show how they change under different lighting situations. Each sculpture is unique and cannot be reproduced by any means. And I am not even sure how I created some of their effects, to be honest!

In a world awash with images that can be printed on any surface, my sculptures are truly original and unique works of art.

And as a bonus, one day I was brought to tears when I realized that people with visual impairment will be able to use their fingertips to trace the textures and patterns in my work.  Not only will they have a tactile adventure, they can literally feel a current or a wavelength. Someone called this, “Braille on steroids!”

These studies of energy as expressed in sculpted textures are quite small, only 6″ square; stepping stones to larger and more powerful compositions. There are 40 in this collection. I love all of them, but I must admit, they’re piling up in my studio! And so it’s time to offer them to collectors. They’re ready to hang; as you can see, their sides are also textured. They come with a special metal hook that will allow you to hang them from any side!

Each Energy Texture sculpture is only $35. I want anyone to be able to own and enjoy an original piece of my art.

Sales tax and shipping costs are extra.
